(midnight picnic on the moon 2014)

The above drawing was influenced by a drawing I did while working on the Bologna Picture book contest.  The small drawing that you can see next to the canvas was the original ink drawing.  I was curious to see how the image would look in a larger size, because it looks so detailed in the smaller size.  I wondered if it would have the same impact.

(my little bones 2014)

I had been experimenting with colored pencils on different materials. I liked the feeling and texture of drawing on canvas.  You have to really grind the pencil to color the canvas and it gave me an image of ancient art on stone walls.  I decided not to fill up the whole canvas as with the color panels I did in the past, and instead leave meandering shapes reaching outwards.

Vilde Chaya,Sendak(2013)

Vilde Chaya,Sendak(2013)
 200 x 200 mm/ 9 x 9in, ink,pen,acryl gouache,paper

I was invited to do the illustration for the exhibition, Tribute to Maurice Sendak (Illustrakids Monster Train 2013).It will held in Cagliari,Italy in this May 2013.The artists have to recreate the world of Sendak's characters using his or her own unique style. Recently, I listened  to his interview with Terry Gross from NPR.During the interview, he said the Monsters from "Where the Wild Things Are,"were based on his uncles, and aunts. This gave me the idea for the title,"Vilde Chaya,Sendak". "Vilde Chaya"means "wild things" in Yiddish.I was inspired  to create a monster that is Sendak himself.

Stranger With A Black Ring (2012)(19x24in,482.6x609.6mm)

This is a drawing done on 2 panels. Recently,I have noticed the way I draw shapes and symbols has changed. It has become more simple compared to my early line drawings like Confessions of an Opium Eater. Maybe because instead of filling in an area,I started to spread out more. Especially when using only black and white,I feel I don't have to fill in space as much as my line drawings. Due to the contrast between b&w being very strong to me (In the line drawing series,I didn't use any black on purpose. I wanted to explore more without b&w.)

This man in the drawing,Stranger with a Black Ring, has a human shape and shooting stars penetrating his back.

He is almost breaking into pieces.

I hope to finish this work before my show.

The print will be available for purchase after my show on my web shop.

Headless Horse (2012)

 Headless Horse (2012)
 420 x 297 mm/ 16.54 x 11.69 ink,pen,paper,wooden panel

This is my new piece titled " Headless Horse ".It took me a week to complete.  It is made by ink, gouache, markers, and two different kinds of papers (collage).
I first started with a shape I had in my mind. It had a huge face like an Easter Island Statue and two legs.  I added black and white symbols and lines first.
But, having a face on the drawing distracted me because I felt like I had to build up some kind of character, and that prevents me from exploring more. So, I covered it up.  I decided
to add colors with gouache, but it also wasn't working for me until I decided pasting different textures of paper might work better for me. I then added colorlines to make it more interesting.

carnival

Carnival (2012)
420 x 297 mm/ 16.54 x 11.69
ink,pen,paper,wooden panel

This drawing has undergone many changes.  The background was originally all colorful dots. Then I painted it black with a different sun design.  I was not satisfied so I pasted white paper over the background and restarted again.  I waited a week to refresh my mind until I came up with this final idea.  The small colorful symbols are like molecules in the air.

Planet

Planet (2012)
297 × 420mm/ 11.69 × 16.54in gouache,ink,paper,wooden panel

In my previous painting "eggplant", I started drawing the black lines first.  This time, I wanted to do the opposite.  I started from the color lines, and I only used curved lines, not straight ( I usually prefer to use straight lines).  I came up with the black design in the center, by picking out some of the color lines, and making connections.  To me, it looks like a small planet.
